Father's Day Dessert

{Ice Cream Steak and Pomme Frites photo from Food Network website}

Cullen and I saw this in my latest Food Network magazine and decided we had to try it for Father's Day.  He is convinced his dad is going to be fooled into thinking it's a real steak and potatoes.  I will let you know how it goes!

*UPDATE*
This dessert came out so cute!  Here's ours.  We didn't have a crinkle cutter for the fries so ours are straight.  And instead of cookie crumbs we used a thin stream of chocolate syrup.  The "ketchup" is strawberry preserves.  Cullen had a great idea and used more chocolate syrup as "steak sauce".

Summer moves on

We are a couple weeks into the kid's summer vacation.  Our annual passes to Six Flags have been getting a workout.  It is already getting up to 98 degrees here a lot of days so we like to go to the park in the late afternoon and stay until closing time.  Cullen is slowing getting more adventurous about riding the bigger rides.

I found a couple more pieces of Pyrex to add to my growing collection.  I am on the lookout for a new jelly cabinet/sideboard/bakers rack to put in my kitchen to display them all.

The other things we seem to be doing a lot of this summer are trips to the library (Cullen has discovered the children's biographies) and frozen yogurt shop.

Things change up a bit starting this week when I start back to work after a 6 month hiatus.  I am excited about it.

Pretzels

Cullen is my little kitchen assistant.  He loves to be in the kitchen cooking with me.  One of our favorite things to snack on is pretzels.  So today we dug out this recipe and make our own soft pretzels.  The recipe is called bread pretzels and they really are the consistency of bread.  We like them without the salt and dipped in melted cheese or mustard.

Camping Journal

A few years ago when we really started camping a lot I made this camping journal to keep a record of our trips.  It's just a simple blank journal with added Thickers letters, a ribbon tied around the front cover and a picnic table charm bookmark.  Every trip is documented with where we stayed, campsite #, highlights and things I want to remember.  Below is the entry for the very first trip we took with our new pop-up camper.  Greg forgot his clothes, it rained most of the weekend, and we had hot dogs for dinner one night.  All things I will enjoy reading about many years from now don't you think?

Somethng new I am going to start this year is to collect a stone from every trip and write the date and place on it like this:

~found on Pinterest with no origin~

I have the perfect glass urn for them in my dining room.  One of our favorite places to go camping has a huge lake so rocks are easy to find.
Camping is something my family did together a lot when I was growing up and I want to make and remember those memories with my own family as well.
