Evidence

Here is evidence you can't put a pan of cookies in the oven and then go get on Pinterest.  You will get sucked in and the cookies will burn and look like this.

I love this large sculpture outside Cullen's school.  About 4 years ago a little boy from our neighborhood died when he was riding his bike in a culvert near the golf course across the street from his house. The culvert had water in it and the boy drowned.  His little brother in Cullen's age and has been on his baseball team.  In fact the boys dad has been the coach of the team and all the boys have worn Nicholas' number on their baseball jersey sleeves.  The family had this sculpture as well as 2 others inside the school made and donated to the school.

Weekend Rambling

{Camera phone picture - horrible quality}

*Every time I lay down on the couch to watch TV and crochet, Bindi the cat just has to sit right there in my way.

*Cullen is officially part of a street gang now.  Really!  There are 3 other boys that live on our little street.  They are all about 6 months to a year older than Cullen but he fits right in.  This weekend has been so warm that the four of them have been out going from one house to the other playing video games, having NERF wars and riding bikes.  Our street is short and I can practically see from one end to the other so I feel they are safe.   They stop in occasionally at our house because apparently I have the best snacks.

*I am fixated on drinking a mixture of OJ and San Pellegrino water.  Just enough fizzy for me.

*Planning a 16th birthday party for Madison.  Not so much a party really.  I am taking her and 3 of her friends to Dallas in February to shop all day at the Galleria then dinner and overnight at a nice hotel nearby.  We are looking at cute cakes to take for a little celebration on the room that night.  I wisely decided to get 2 adjoining rooms.  I trust these girls completely and this way they can have 2 beds and some privacy and I can be nearby.  Any ideas of little gifts to get the girls to have in the hotel?  We were thinking little bags with nail polish and a cake pop, and whatever else we can think of to add.

*I can't tell you the fear that grips my heart every time I think about Madison driving.  We have been taking her out to practice in parking lots at the school and I know she is very level headed.  And she will start Drivers Ed soon.  But just the idea of my child out in the world alone in a car almost brings me to tears!

*I haven't mentioned that I am no longer working.  While the leaving situation wasn't the best I am relieved to be rid of the stress from that job.  I am looking for something else but enjoy my time at home in the meantime.

*I have been working on a baby clothes quilt for Becki.  I love working with all the little baby things.

*All the Pinterest recipes I posted earlier this week were tried and well recieved.  The baked spaghetti especially.

Croutons

I love when I have leftover artisan or homemade bread so I can make croutons!  I often buy rosemary bread or some kind of herb bread at the grocery store and we usually end up not eating it all while it's fresh.  So I take my leftover loaf and cut it into 3/4" cubes.  Toss with a scant amount of olive oil (just enough to coat, not to saturate them) and scatter on a baking pan.  Bake at 350 degrees until they toast up into little crispy croutons.   They keep a couple of days in a ziploc bag.
If the bread doesn't already have some kind of seasoning in it, such as when I buy sourdough loaves, I will add a little rosemary, caraway seed or any other savory spice as I toss them in oil.
These are great on salads and especially good in soup.  I sometimes go another step and grind them up to make great tasting bread crumbs for a topping on a casserole.
Of course, the bowl you see above, that's the ones I am eating fresh out of the oven all by themselves while I'm typing.  So I guess they are good just as a snack too.

Cooking with Pinterest

Like most everyone else, I'm addicted to Pinterest.   When doing this week's meal planning I looked almost exclusively to Pinterest for my nightly dinners.  Here are a few of the things I am cooking from Pinterest this week.

Giant Grannys

I had the idea to make some huge granny squares from some of my odd balls of yarn.  Then it was easy to join them all together with this wide brown border. Each granny square is about 15" wide so I think it makes a big bold statement!  It's a nice generous crib size blanket for a special new baby.

Crochet Jar Jacket

I've been wanting to make a crochet jar jacket for awhile like the ones Lucy at Attic24 makes.  I finally remembered to keep a pickle jar after it was emptied and this was a quick little project for one corner of my mantle.   Now I just need the kids to eat more pickles so I can make another one!

Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo

Yesterday was the Ft. Worth Stock Show Parade.  We had a great time and the weather was perfect!  I can only imagine the number of horses that particiapated in the parade.  We joked that we saw every horse from 200 miles around.

Pink Munchkin Hat

My friend is started a newborn photography business and I am trying to help her with some hats for the babies to wear.  This is a small stocking cap I made from this pattern I found of Ravelry.  It was super quick and finished in about 1 1/2 sittings.  I am making a blue and striped version next.

We had a wonderfully slow weekend around here.  The weather is finally turning cold and feels like January has decided to show up.  Lots of time spent in our pajamas and making hot chocolate with my new Keurig coffeemaker.  We like the little green tea and hot chocolate pods just as much as the coffee pods.
I spent most of my time this weekend working on a couple of new crochet baby blankets.  One has been in progress and is about done and ready to show.  The other was just started this weekend.  I tried to get some photos in this dreary, dark weather.  As you can see above I did get quite a bit done in little bits and pieces.  Our neighbors are having a new baby girl next month and I think one of these new afghans will be for her.

Dallas Zoo

For as long as we have had kids we have enjoyed going to zoos.  The other day we were trying to count how many different zoos we have visited over the years.  I think we settled on eleven.  From Santa Barbara, CA to Memphis, TN.  Living here we have two zoos nearby in Dallas and in Ft. Worth.  We have decided we like the Dallas Zoo the best.  There are several things that factor into this but one of the main reasons is the chance to feed the giraffes some lettuce at every visit.  We took Cullen for a visit last weekend on an usually warm TX December day.  This giraffe was especially hungry.

Happy Pillow

This cute little qulted 9 square pillow has just been added to my shop.  I love the quilted top and happy pink dotted backing.  This would look so cute in a little girls room or nursery.

2012

The first day of a new year is always exciting isn't it?  Today I am looking back at a great 2011 and thinking
about the possibility of some new opportunities and memories to be made in 2012.
We have enjoyed a nice relaxing long weekend with wonderful warm weather.  A trip to the Dallas Zoo, lots of video games and football on TV, and some outside yarn work have made for a great time together.
Hope everyone has a wonderful 2012.
